The stimulus was first described by Guttman & Julesz
(1963). It
served for numerous psychophysical studies. Its bearing is switching
between
periodicity detection (“infrapitch”, e.g.
Warren&Bashford 1981) and
echoic memory (e.g. Cowan 1984).
